Information - Technical FAQ's

Q What is the difference between halogen and ordinary bulbs?

A Tungsten and halogen bulbs use a metal filament to make light, however, the filament in the halogen bulb provides a brighter whiter light. They are also more efficient and longer lasting.

Q Do I need a transformer for each recessed halogen downlight?

A We strongly recommend individual transformers as they are easier to install and maintain. In addition they are small, lightweight and generate very little heat. The extra cost compared with the ‘traditional’ transformer is now so small that their advantages outweigh any price difference. Most electricians now prefer to fit this type of unit.

Q Do I need a special dimmer for halogen downlights?

A No. If you are using a new electronic type transformer they can be dimmed using a regular domestic dimmer switch.

Q How much space in the ceiling do I need if I want to fit downlights?

A For the halogen variety we recommend a ceiling void depth of around 8 inches. A regular downlight needs only about 5 inches. NB It is very important not to lay insulation over the top of any recessed light fitting as it could be a fire hazard.

Q How many recessed lights do I need to light my room?

A This varies a great deal as every room is different. A general rule of thumb however is that the spacing between each light is usually no less than 600mm (2ft) and no more than 1500mm (5ft). 1 meter (3ft) is a good average.

Q What is the main difference between low voltage and mains voltage halogen lights?

A Low voltage lights will give a brighter, whiter more intense light than the ‘mains’ version. In addition, they are available in a variety of wattage’s and beam widths. The mains variety, however can be installed in awkward places as no transformer is required.

Q How long will ordinary and halogen bulbs last?

A Regular tungsten light bulbs and reflector bulbs should last on average 1,000 hours. Halogen bulbs should last on average 3,000 hours. NB a dimmer switch can prolong the life of a bulb up to 6 times !

Q Do I need any special lights in my bathroom?

A It is recommended you use only enclosed lights in a bathroom. You should not be able to touch a bulb whilst standing in a bath or shower. Wall lights can be switched but it must have a pull cord.

Q Which lights give the best illumination for making up or shaving?

A in a bathroom wall lights should be fitted. Ideally these would be either side of a mirror or just above but pointing down.

Q How can I tell if the shade I like is big enough for my table lamp?

A The only real way to find out is to try it, however a good rule of thumb is that the height of the base should equal the width of the shade.

Q We live in an exposed position and I am concerned the lanterns we’ve chosen will corrode?

A Most of the lanterns we sell are made of aluminium. Whilst they will not rust, after a period of time their finish may eventually appear dull. Our high quality lanterns carry a 25 year guarantee against corrosion and their finish will remain constant throughout even in salty conditions.

Q What If I don’t like the light I have just bought when I get it home?

A If you have purchased a light fitting from stock and it is unsuitable it my be returned for a full refund or exchange. This is only on applicable if it is returned in a saleable condition with a receipt.
